I spent eleven years marketing a tool hire business, depot by depot. Every new town taught the same lesson: national visibility is nice, but the customer who matters is three miles away, searching with their postcode in mind and their van already running. Local SEO is how you're standing there when they look, and UK interest in it has almost quadrupled since autumn.
What local SEO actually is
When a search has local intent ("tool hire near me", "accountant preston", "emergency plumber"), Google shows the map pack: three businesses, with reviews, hours and directions, above almost everything else. Local SEO is the work of earning one of those three places, plus the localised organic results beneath them. It's a different contest from national SEO, with different rules: proximity, prominence and relevance, in Google's own words.

The pillars that decide it
Your Google Business Profile does the heaviest lifting: complete, accurate, categorised correctly, with real photos and regular posts. Reviews are both ranking fuel and the deciding vote: volume, recency and your replies all count. Consistency quietly underpins everything: your name, address and phone number must match exactly across your site, directories and profiles, because every mismatch erodes trust in who you are. And your website needs a page per place and service: a real page with local proof, not a template with the town name swapped.
Five moves this month
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Every field, real photos, correct categories. Most local businesses stop at half-done.
- Ask for reviews systematically. Make it a habit at the moment of a happy customer, not an occasional scramble, and reply to every one.
- Fix your NAP everywhere. One exact version of your name, address and phone, hunted down and corrected across the web.
- Build genuine local pages. One per location or service area, with the projects, people and proof that belong to it.
- Earn a few local links. Sponsor the club, join the chamber, get covered by the local paper. All signals a national competitor can't fake.
