The honest answer is: whatever you're willing to spend. Google Ads has no minimum. You could run it on £5 a day. The better question (the one that decides whether ads make you money) is what a click costs in your market, and what each click turns into. That's arithmetic, and you can do it before spending a pound.
What a click actually costs
Click prices are set by auction, so they track how valuable your customer is to everyone bidding. In the UK, broad retail and local-service clicks often land in the £1–£3 range. Competitive professional services run higher. At the sharp end it gets eye-watering: the search term "PPC management", where every bidder is literally a bidding expert, trades at around £22 a click.

The maths that matters
Work it backwards from a lead, not forwards from a budget. Say clicks in your market cost £2, and your website converts 3% of visitors into enquiries. A £600 monthly budget buys ~300 clicks, which becomes roughly 9 enquiries, about £67 per enquiry. If a customer is worth £1,000 to you, that's a machine you'd happily feed. If a customer is worth £80, the same machine quietly eats your margin.
That's why "how much does it cost?" has no single number: the same spend is cheap for one business and ruinous for another. The cost that matters is cost per result, and it's different for everyone.
What actually brings costs down
- Relevance, ruthlessly. Tight ad groups where the search, the ad and the landing page all say the same thing: Google charges sloppy accounts more for the same click.
- Negative keywords. The fastest saving in most accounts is stopping paying for searches you never wanted.
- Landing pages built to convert. Doubling your conversion rate halves your cost per lead without touching bids.
- Measure to the sale, not the click. When you know which keywords produce customers, not just visits, you can spend where it pays and cut where it doesn't.
When ads are the wrong answer
If your website leaks, ads pour water into a cracked bucket. Fix conversion first. If margins are thin and customer value is low, SEO's slower compounding usually beats renting clicks. Anyone who recommends ads before asking about your numbers is selling ads, not results.
